Doing FLIPS: FLexible Interactive Presentation Synchronization
نویسندگان
چکیده
Multimedia presentation technology has enormous potential for a myriad of applications including academic classrooms, industrial training, and business presentations. As presentation technology advances, it is possible to incorporate a wider range of media including variable duration media such as simulations and animations. At the same time, users are able to take more control over presentations by controlling the rate and selection of media being played. To make full use of these advances, multimedia systems must support exible presentations that incorporate many variations in the way they are played. This paper identiies three requirements for exible presentations and derives four requirements for synchronization of exible presentations. The paper presents FLexible Interactive Presentation Synchronization (FLIPS), a model for specifying coarse synchronization for exible presentations. FLIPS supports a wide range of temporal synchronization speciications. It also provides algorithms for attaining a consistent and coherent presentation state in response to user interaction (e.g., skipping to a diierent slide or selection) and other state-changing events. Applications of the FLIPS model are discussed.

Modeling with enhanced prioritized Petri nets: EP-nets
Recently, many researchers have their attention focused on interactive temporal models, like the extended finite state machines or the extended Petri net models. One of the recent mechanisms proposed for synchronization is known as the Prioritized Petri net, P-Net, which is implemented in the Distributed Object Composition Petri Net, DOCPN. The development of DOCPN has achieved media synchroniz...
متن کاملTowards a new multimedia synchronization mechanism and its formal specification
The design of a distributed multimedia application involves both temporal and spatial synchronization problems related to the processing, transport, storage, retrieval and presentation of data, sound, still images and video. Within this general framework, the paper aims at defining a new multimedia synchronization mechanism, the so-called conditional delivery mechanism, which appears particular...
متن کاملCorrection to 'MPGS: An Interactive Tool for the Specification and Generation of Multimedia Presentations'
ÐMultimedia presentations are composed of objects belonging to different data types such as video, audio, text, and image. An important aspect is that, quite often, the user defining a presentation needs to express sophisticated temporal and spatial constraints among the objects composing the presentation. In this paper, we present a system (called MPGSÐMultimedia Presentation Generator System)...

Multimedia streams usually require prefetching and buffering to ens’ure steady, glitch-fnee d e h e r y to audio and video displays, but buffering ca’uses undesirable latency. This latency may be manifested as startup delays, glitches, dropouts, and loss of synchronization. I n interactive media presentations .where there are a small number of choices, alternative streams can be prefetched to r...
متن کاملMultimedia Synchronization Through Interactive Active Objects
This paper presents an Active Objects Model as an environment for the implementation and demonstration of key concepts in the emerging ISO/IEC Standard, PResentation Environments for Multimedia Objects (PREMO). The event-based synchronization mechanism which is a key concept in multimedia presentation is presented through a set of examples. The AOM model consists of a set of active agents with ...
